Mission:
1 - Third Contact
Location: Security Chief Office
Devon entered the security department. Since arriving on the Quebec, the Ensign had been involved with in processing. But today was first day at work. Walking to the department heads door, he pressed the chime.
Lieutenant Turner had been behind closed doors trying to get his office situated. Right now, it was a mess consisting of things that he collect throughout his time in Starfleet. Dealing with some frustration about his office, not being exactly where it needed to be with his stuff. Most people would say that it shouldn't be too big of a deal. But in all honesty, he would be spending more time here than in his quarters. Besides struggling with is office, he was also dealing with a pissed off child at home. Hopefully he was at school making new friends. Hearing the chime from out of nowhere, he sighed a bit. "Come on in."
The door opened as an Ensign entered the room. "Ensign Devon Hunt, reporting for duty Sir."
Extending his hand towards the Ensign, he accepted the PADD the young man came in with. "Have a seat Ensign Hunt."
Devon sat down as instructed and watched as the Lieutenant scrolled through his orders. Looking around at the mess, he could see that Turner was just arriving on the ship himself.
"So, this is your second assignment," Gregory brought up. "Good to know that your not completely green, fresh out of the Academy. Been around long enough to realize that Starfleet is more than what's in those textbooks."
"Yes Sir."
"So why did you request to transfer to the Quebec?" Turner questioned.
"Honestly it was based on Starfleet giving command of a starship to a Gelrakian," the Ensign admitted. "To be a part of history when it goes right or be a witness if it goes wrong. My curiosity is the reason I placed the transfer orders."
Gregory stared at the young man at the other end of his desk and thought about the answer. "These are interesting times indeed. Have you had a chance to meet the other Ensigns,
Devon raised a confused eyebrow. "Yes, I have."
"Good. Keep an eye on them since you are one of the most experienced Ensigns. They clearly will look up to you with guidance."
"To be honest, not sure if that's possible."
"Ensign Hunt this is your second assignment" the Lieutenant replied while holding up in hand. "Trust me, they will seek out your counsel and guidance at some point."
Taking in those words carefully, Hunt nodded. "I'm about two years older than most of them. Yet, I feel like the old guy in the lower decks."
"That's the experience factor," Gregory responded with a laugh. "Don't run from it. Be the leader."
"Yes Sir."
Turner stared at the Ensign for a brief moment. "You seem a bit reluctant to lead. Is there a particular reason for that?"
Thinking about the answer, Devon decided to just be honest. "Being in the lower desks, we're all crowded together. Little to no privacy. Which leads to rarely a moment of privacy."
"So, your privacy is the reason for your reluctance to lead?"
"Not privacy exactly," the young man tried to explain. "Its just that the need to lead, counsel and provide guidance is nonstop in such close quarters. Sometimes, I just want to shut off my brain and not be bothered."
The Lieutenant could help but to laugh. "I get where you're coming from. Been there myself with the privacy issue. I was never in this position to be the leader in the lower decks due to my age."
Devon was a bit surprised by the response from the Lieutenant. "Just assumed that you would automatically have just stepped up to lead your peers. You have that presence about you."
"Ensign, I was only aboard the USS Nelson for barely four weeks when we engaged the Dominion at the battle of Chin'Toka," Turner responded. "Fresh out of the Academy and when those Jem'Hadar boarded the ship, I was afraid. But my instincts allowed me to fight and get as many people off the ship as possible."
"We studied that battle at the Academy," Hunt spoke softly. "Starfleet won the battle that day."
"Not without taking way too many losses," Gregory countered as he thought about that day. A day that killed much of his innocence. And that was just one battle he found himself being a party to. "Ensign, I hope that through your career you will never have to experience war. A fight or ship skirmishes are inevitable. But a full-blown war, changes everything."
Seeing the Chief Security Officer's mind temporarily drift; reminded him of when his older cousin Kenneth would tell him about the Dominion War. As if they were relieving the moment all over again. "I completely understand, Sir."
Refocusing his attention back on the present. Grgeory smiled. "You're one of the senior Ensign's, so I do expect more from you. Undertood."
"Crystal clear, Lieutenant."
"Good, familiarize yourself with the Department and we'll speak more later. Dismissed."
